SonbhadraSonbhadra district in the second largest district in the state of Uttar Pradesh and it is sited at the extreme south east end of the state. Robertsganj is the district headquarters of Sonbhadra. The district is very popularly called as the “Energy Capital of India” because Sonbhadra is one of the leading producers of power in India. The district has one of the biggest industrial establishments in India. Also it has very good transport facility to support the industrial establishments. Hindi and Urdu are the chief spoken languages in the district apart from which English and Bhojpuri is also spoken. People of all communities and religions reside in Sonbhadra.

Demography of Sonbhadra

As per 2011 census the district had a total population of about 1,862,559 people out of which 971, 344 were male population and 891,215 were female population. The census reports the population growth in Sonbhadra was increased by 27.27 percentages in comparison with 2001 census. The population density is about 270 persons / sq km. As per census the total number of children within the age group of 0 to 6 was 323,092 out of which boys constitute 167,870 and girls constitute 155,222. The literacy rate of Sonbhadra in 2011 was 64.03 which was a very notable rise when compared to the district’s literacy rate in 2001 which was 49.22. The male literacy rate is about 74.92 and the female literacy rate is about 52.14. Total number of literates in the district is 985,708. The sex ratio of the district is 918 female per 1000 male and the child sex ratio is 925 girls per 1000 boys. Nearly -3.34 net changes occurred in children population in comparison with 2001 census.

Rural and Urban Sonbhadra

The total rural population of district is 83.12 % while the urban is 18.88 %, out of which the male population constitutes 803,345 in rural & 167,999 in urban and the female population constitutes 744,872 in rural & 146,343 in urban. The rural sex ratio is 927 female out of 1000 male and 871 female out of 1000 male in urban Sonbhadra. The total children under 0 to 6 years in rural areas are 284,923 and 38,169 in urban. The child sex ratios in rural areas are 933 and in urban is about 868 girl child out of 1000 boy child. The average literacy rate in rural area is 59.60 % while in urban is 84.31 %. The male literacy rate in rural Sonbhadra is 71.37 % while in urban is 90.73 %. The female literacy rate in rural Sonbhadra is 46.89 % while in urban is 76.93 %.

Culture of Sonbhadra

The district is rich in culture and heritage. Festivals and religious events are celebrated at a grand scale in the district. Son Mahotsava is a very popular cultural event organized annually in the district headquarters Robertsganj that attracts numerous visitors, participants and tourist from different parts of the district and the state.

Tribals in Sonbhadra

Sonbhadra district homes nearly 16 different tribes that are Gond, Dhuriya, Nayak, Ojha, Pathari, Rajgode, Kharwar, Khairwar, Parahiya, Baiga, Pankha, Panika, Agriya, Chero, Bhuiya and Bhuniya. They are spread out at various localities in the district like Roberstganj, Chora, Drama, Dinari and many more. Dhangari is one of the chief spoken languages of the tribes residing in Sonbhadra and Karma is a popular tribal dance of Sonbhadra.

Forests in Sonbhadra

Out of the total 6788 sq km of Sonbhadra district the forest alone spreads out for about 3782 sq km out of which dense forest covers 1078 sq km and open forest covers 1369 sq km. Sonbhadra forest homes 300 birds, 66 herbal plants and different varieties of trees and wild animals like Black buck, black monkey, etc. Paryavaran Vahini is an organization under the Ministry of Forest and Environment which is responsible for forest area and environment in Sonbhadra.
