HindalcoSonbhadra district is popularly called as the “Energy Capital of India” as the district houses numerous electric power plants and thermal power plants. Sonbhadra is the leading producer of electric power in the nation and it ranked second in power production next to Dadri in the western region of the state. Sonbhadra district was once covered fully by hills, mountains and water streams but now the region has become the hot spot for industrial development in recent decade as it operates aluminum power plant, thermal power plant, electric power plant, carbon plant and many more. The district produces about 11000 mega watt power and also got a goal to reach 20000 mega watts in the near future. The Rihand Dam and the Obra Dam produces the hydro electric power of about 300 mega watt and 99 mega watts respectively. In 2006, Sonbhadra was listed as one of the most backward districts in India including 640 other district from various parts of India by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj. Sonbhadra currently receives development funds from BRGF – Backward Regions Grant Fund.

Cement Industries in Sonbhadra

Most of the hills in the district are coal rich while few hills in the district are limestone rich. The lime stone wealth leads to the establishment of cement factories in the district and the first cement factory was installed in 1956 at Churk and then in Dala, Chunar and Robertsganj. And because of these cement factories the related industries started emerging in Sonbhadra.

Sonbhadra Energy Capital of India

Sonbhadra is called the energy capital of India because of its coal wealth and numerous power plants which are all incorporated on the banks of Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar Lake behind Rihand River Dam. The UPRVUNL - Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam limited is responsible for managing the thermal power plants installed in Sonbhadra while the NTPC – National Thermal Power Corporation Limited is responsible for managing electric power generation through electric power plants in Sonbhadra. NTPC is a central government agency working under the Ministry of Power. The district operates three major NTPC coal-based thermal power plants in Shakti Nagar, Vindhya Nagar and Bijpur. The Shakti Nagar thermal power plant was the first thermal power plant installed in India.

Hindalco Industry in Renukoot

Hindalco stands for Hindustan Aluminum Corporation limited was one of the most popular industrial establishment in Sonbhadra installed in Renukoot in 1958 and it was owned by the Aditya Birla Group. Hindalco is one of the leading producers of aluminium and copper in Asian continent who started their first aluminum plant in Sonbhadra at Renukoot. Initially, the aluminium plant had a capacity to produce about 20 thousand tpa of aluminum with a potline and a smelter.

Over years the plant increased its output by improvising its infrastructure and by adding new units. Hindalco in Renukoot does Alumina refining, bauxite mining, smelting, rolling and extrusions. At present Renukoot Hindalco has alumina refinery to produce 70 thousand tpa and an aluminum smelter with a capacity of 345,000 tpa. The plant covers a total area of about 1056 acre plot constructed just behind the Rihand Dam and it comprises of staff colony, hospital, gardens, clubs, banks, eateries, supermarkets, sports arena, cultural hall and Renukeshwar Mahadev temple. The power plant was given the IMS certification – Integrated Management System. Hindalco has also started another power plant in Renusagar city of Sonbhadra which was the first ever CPP i.e. Captive power plant installed in India.
